John Wooden’s Pyramid Of Success

John Wooden was an American basketball player and legendary coach who won ten NCAA national championships in a 12-year period as head coach at UCLA, including a record seven in a row. To put that into context, no other team has won more than three in a row in D1 college basketball. During this period Wooden also set a men’s basketball record of 88 consecutive wins.

The Pyramid of Success, courtesy of The John R. Wooden Course is a visual and verbal representation of Wooden’s concept of what it takes to succeed. Fifteen fundamental values and 10 supporting attributes are represented, which he believes are “prerequisites for a leader and an organization whose goal is to perform at the highest level of which they are capable.”

Wooden used this Pyramid as a foundation for his players, his staff, and himself throughout his distinguished career.

Each value has a specific role within the Pyramid designed to bring success to individuals and organizations when executed.
