Children across Scotland enjoyed a fantastic day of football fun earlier this month as the Tesco Bank Football Challenge welcomed 300 kids to Hampden Park in Glasgow.
Former Aston Villa and Norwich City manager Paul Lambert and Scotland and Glasgow City winger Hayley Lauder were on hand as the children took part in an energetic session on the pitch.
The pupils have taken part in six weeks of coaching sessions as part of the Scottish FA’s flagship participation programme, coming together for a fun-filled finale on Hampden’s hallowed turf.
“It was brilliant to see so many children have a fantastic time on the pitch at Hampden,” said former Scotland, Celtic and Borussia Dortmund star Lambert.
“I am sure these are memories they’ll remember for a long time. It’s really important to get them excited about being active and the Tesco Bank Football Challenge really helps to do that.”
The Tesco Bank Football Challenge is a long term community programme run in partnership with the Scottish FA. The project introduces football to Primary Two and Primary Three children – six to eight years old – across Scotland to help get them engaged in a healthy and active lifestyle.
Over 82,000 children have now been engaged in the country’s leading football participation programme. Teachers and volunteers continue to enjoy the Scottish FA’s in-service programme with over 5,000 now trained to support the growth of football in schools.
Glasgow city star Hayley Lauder said: “What an exciting experience for all the children to enjoy a day at the national stadium. Hopefully it can help them develop a long-term love of football, and generally staying fit, healthy and active.
Jim Fleeting, Director of Football Development at the Scottish FA said: “The Tesco Bank Football Challenge has once again been a great success this year, with lots of happy children here today to prove it. We are also delighted to be supporting thousands of teachers along the way too, and we are proud that over 5,000 have benefited from Scottish FA in-service training. Today’s festival at Hampden is an excellent way to end another brilliant year.”
David McCreadie, Managing Director, Banking at Tesco Bank, added: “This is our fifth year of support and I’m delighted to see the positive effect the Tesco Bank Football Challenge has had in encouraging tens of thousands of teachers and children to engage in an active lifestyle.”
