Welsh scheme shows 30% boost in participation

The Welsh Football Trust has announced that player participation within the Vauxhall Fun Football scheme grew from 93,000 to over 120,000 in 2012.

The data was collated by the National Vauxhall Fun Football Coordinator, Meirion Appleton, through the 21 organisations that are accredited by the Welsh Football Trust throughout Wales.

Figures increased significantly in 10 of the 12 months. July and August were the weakest months in 2011 but showed a significant increase in 2012. The introduction of the Vauxhall soccer camps contributed to this with organsations delivering camps that were subsidized by Vauxhall to prevent cost being a barrier to participants.

Four out of the six area associations saw a significant rise in participation figures, with South Wales FA leading the way with an increase of 69% on 2011. The North Wales Coast FA region continues to provide the most participation, opportunities rising by 50% from 2011 to 54,088 in 2012.

Data is collated into three categories: Girls, Boys and Disability. The table below provides a good insight into how the Welsh Football Trust are utilising the good work of the accredited organisations to ‘grow the game and raise standards’ in priority areas such as Girls and Disability.

2012 was also important with the announcement of the Vauxhall sponsorship, which demonstrates a financial commitment from Vauxhall to prioritise investment into grassroots as well as the National Team, recognising the need to support the next generation.

The programme continues to grow from strength to strength and 2012 has seen it reach new heights thanks to the dedicated work of the 21 accredited organisations, maintaining standards and delivering excellent provision outside of affiliated structures.

With many applications waiting to be processed, the scheme promises to grow even further in 2013.
