CW Poll: Let Team GB women play at Rio 2016

Seven out of eight Club Website members want to see a Team GB women's football team at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

The Football Association this month left open the possibility of a women's team taking part at Rio 2016, despite ruling out the appearance of a men's team in Brazil.

Hope Powell's team lost to Canada in the quarter-finals at the London Games this summer, but their Olympic campaign raised the profile of the sport to new levels.

Over 155,000 people attended Team GB's four games in total, including a record crowd of 70,584 at Wembley Stadium to see the unforgettable 1-0 victory over Brazil, a game watched by a peak TV audience of 3.9 million people.

Prime-time TV coverage on the BBC gave the women's game a shot in the arm like never before, providing momentum that the FA now hopes to harness in their new five-year plan for women's football, launched this week.

A recent FA Women's Super League survey found that 70% of people surveyed would consider going to watch a live women’s game – an increase of 15% on before London 2012 - while there also a 43% rise in people who said they would be more likely to participate in the sport.

FA General Secretary Alex Horne confirmed this month that Team GB won't be entering a men's team at the Rio Games, but left the door open to the possibility of the women's team still entering a side.

"I don't think we will do it again for the men's team," Horne told BBC Radio 5 live.

"For the women, we will keep talking to people about it. We are not ruling it out completely. We went through a lot of politics to get here."

It may take further determination and time at the negotiating table for another Olympic adventure in four years' time but, if our poll results are anything to go by, it would be time well spent.

Less than half of the 1,400 people surveyed said they wanted to see both a men's and women's team take part in the Rio Games, but only one in eight said that they wished to see no GB team in 2016.

CW Poll: Should the GB women's football team be allowed to submit a side as a unified nation for the Rio 2016 Olympics?

* Yes - the men should also be allowed too 45.3%
* Yes - it helps the profile of the women's game 42.2%
* No - there should be no unified GB team 12.5%
